Most tradies get work from word of mouth, and that is a great start. But even a customer who was given your name by a neighbour will usually look you up before they call. What they find in those few seconds decides whether your phone rings or they try the next name on the list.

A tradie website does not need to be fancy. It needs to answer a few simple questions fast, on a phone, and make calling you the obvious next step. This guide covers what yours needs, the mistakes that cost you jobs, and how it works together with Google.

What your website is really for

Think of your website as the person who answers the phone when you are up a ladder. A homeowner with a leaking tap or a dead power point wants three things: proof you do the job they need, proof you work in their area, and a quick way to reach you. If your site gives them those three things, it is doing its job. Everything else is extra.

9 things every tradie website needs

1. A phone number you can tap on every page

Put your number at the top of every page, and make it a tap-to-call link on mobile. Most people searching for a tradie are on their phone, often standing next to the problem. If they have to copy your number from a footer, some of them won’t bother.

2. What you do and where, in the first screen

The top of your home page should say it plainly, for example “Licensed electrician in Gosford and the Central Coast”. Skip slogans like “Quality you can trust”. A visitor should know within a glance that you do their job in their area.

3. One page for each main service

A single “Services” page with a list of ten items gives Google very little to work with. A separate page for hot water systems, blocked drains and bathroom renovations lets each one show up for the people searching for exactly that. Each page should say what the job involves, what affects the price, and what happens when someone calls.

4. Your service area, in words

List the suburbs and towns you cover, in plain text on the page rather than only in a map image. It helps Google match you to local searches, and it saves you calls from people well outside your area.

5. Photos of your own work

Real photos of jobs you have finished beat polished stock photos every time. A tidy switchboard, a finished deck or a before-and-after of a bathroom shows the standard of your work better than any sentence can. Take them on your phone as you go; good light matters more than a good camera.

6. Proof you are the real deal

Show your licence number, your insurance and any trade association you belong to. Link to your Google reviews so people can read them in full. These details answer the quiet worry every homeowner has about letting a stranger into their house.

7. A short quote form

Some people would rather not call, especially after hours. Give them a simple form: name, phone, suburb and a line about the job, with an option to add a photo. Every extra field you add is another reason to give up halfway.

8. Fast and easy on a phone

Check your own site on your phone, on mobile data, not on the office wifi. If it is slow to load, the text is tiny or buttons sit too close together, fix that before anything else. A slow site loses people before they see a single word.

9. Tracking, so you know what works

Set up Google Analytics and track calls and form enquiries from the site. Then you can see which pages and which ads bring in work, rather than guessing. It also stops you paying for advertising that sends visitors who never call.

טיפ: Ask a friend who doesn’t know your business to open your website on their phone and find your number, your service area and one photo of your work. Watch where they get stuck. That is the first thing to fix.

Common mistakes that cost tradies calls

  • Only a Facebook page. Facebook is handy for updates, but you don’t control it, and it rarely shows up when someone searches for a service in their suburb.
  • A site that is years out of date. Old phone numbers, services you no longer offer or a “Latest news” post from years back make people wonder if you are still trading.
  • No prices or price guidance at all. You don’t need a full price list, but a line about what affects the cost, or a starting price for common jobs, filters out time-wasters and builds trust.
  • Too much about the business, not enough about the customer. Your history is nice; the visitor mainly wants to know you can fix their problem.
  • Hiding behind a contact form. If the only way to reach you is a form, many people will call someone else.

Your website and Google work as a team

When someone searches “plumber near me”, the map results come from Google Business Profiles, and many of those profiles link to a website. A clear, fast site helps people choose you once they find you on the map. A well-kept profile helps people find you in the first place. Our guide to Google Business Profile fixes that bring in more calls covers the quick wins there.

If you later run Google Ads, the same site becomes your landing page, and every point above affects how many clicks turn into calls. A good website makes every dollar of advertising work harder.

FAQ

Do tradies really need a website?

Yes, if you want work beyond word of mouth. Even referred customers usually look you up first, and a clear website with your services, area and phone number gives them the confidence to call.

What pages should a tradie website have?

Start with a home page, one page for each main service, an about page with your licence and insurance details, and a contact page. Add your service area and photos of your own work across the site.

Is a Facebook page enough for a tradie?

Usually not. A Facebook page is useful for updates, but it rarely shows up in local service searches and you don’t control it. A website you own works alongside your Facebook page and Google Business Profile.
